What do we say about the Holy Spirit?
Fifty days after Easter, Jesus' friends are together in one room. Suddenly there's a sound like a roaring wind, something like fire, and everyone hears the good news in their own language. The Holy Spirit has arrived.

- John 14:26. Jesus promises that the Father will send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, to teach the disciples and remind them of everything Jesus said.
- Acts 2:2–4. On Pentecost, a sound like a rushing wind fills the house. Something like tongues of fire rests on each disciple. They are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in other languages.
The third part of the Apostles' Creed
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Words to know
- Pentecost. The day the Holy Spirit came, fifty days after Easter. Some call it the church's birthday. It's why many churches use red that Sunday.
- Advocate. Jesus' name for the Holy Spirit in John 14: one who stands beside you. The Spirit isn't far away. The Spirit stands with you, teaching and reminding.
- Wind. The sound that filled the house at Pentecost. In both Hebrew and Greek, one word means spirit, breath, and wind.
- Fire. What appeared over each disciple at Pentecost. Fire gives warmth and light. The Spirit gives courage to speak.
- Red. The church's color for the Day of Pentecost. In many churches, look for it on the altar and on what worship leaders wear on Pentecost Sunday.
- Languages. What the disciples suddenly spoke, so everyone could understand. God's good news isn't for one people or one language. It's for everyone.
